It is set in the backdrop of the Vembanad Lake which is the largest freshwater lake in the state of Kerala. Kumarakom is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is a noted bird sanctuary in Kerala where many species of migrating birds visit. We can see the migratory birds in the banks of the lakes. The season of migratory birds are from November to June. The Bird Sanctuary extends over 14 acres (57,000 m2) and came into existence following the preservation efforts from the Government.
The Vembanad lake, the largest backwater in Kerala is the habitat for many marine and fresh water species. The Karimeen (Pearl spot (Etroplus suratensis)), Shrimp (Metapenaeus dobosonii) common name Povalan Chemeen.

Boating gacility os also avaiilable in Kumarakom. We can reach Pathiramanal Island with in an hour by boat. KTDC house boats and private house boats are available for rent. Speed boats are also available.
